Wouter DAM 2019

May 23 - July 06, 2019

20 rue des Coutures Saint Gervais 75003 Paris

These wheel-thrown and assembled ceramic pieces are marked by a delicate balancing of concave and convex shapes and defined outlines. Monochrome matt colours are used to bring out these sculptural qualities. Light wraps around curves, creating soft shades and filtering through the sculptures; light defines the form. The viewer is invited to follow the curves and the light that moves over and through the piece; though no angle reveals the overall form. These sensuous objects are made to seduce the eye.

The static and dynamic elements of these works are in balance, just as their material and evocative qualities reinforce each other. The sculptures allude to body and landscape, flowing forms, water and movement. Individual shapes in the pieces refer to archetypal vessel forms. This evokes a sense of the familiar while the resulting sculptures are abstract.

These ceramic pieces are connected to modern as well as classical sculpture. The work of Barbara Hepworth, or the 17th century master carver Grinling Gibbons comes to mind. The ambition of the pieces are firmly rooted in ceramic tradition.
